Description

American statesman (1801–1872) who served as secretary of state in the administration of President Abraham Lincoln and who was severely injured in an attack that was part of the assassination conspiracy. His greatest political achievement was the purchase of Alaska from Russia, derided by contemporary skeptics as 'Seward's Folly.' ALS, one page, 5 x 8, September 1, 1853. Handwritten letter to Supreme Court Associate Justice John McLean, in full: "I beg to introduce to the honor of your acquaintance Col. William Schouler, a member of the late Constitution Convention in Massachusetts and the late Editor of the Boston Atlas. He is a strong man and a true one—and he goes to Cincinnati with some idea of establishing himself there. I know of no man so capable of being widely useful." In fine condition.

William Schouler (1814-1872) was an American journalist and politician. After making a career in the Boston area—as the owner and editor of the Lowell Courier, a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, and a delegate at the 1853 Massachusetts State Constitutional Convention—he moved to Ohio, where he became the editor for the Cincinnati Gazette and later the Ohio State Journal. In 1855 he was appointed Adjutant-General of Ohio by Salmon P. Chase. Schouler later returned to Massachusetts, where he held the same position throughout the Civil War.
